Thank you to Helena Hunting and her team for the advance reader copy of Where It Begins, a Pucked prequel story.

Pucked is still one of my favourite hockey romance series I have ever read! When I first heard about this prequel I was ecstatic to be back in this universe, and to get a glimpse into a love story I never thought I would get to read.

I am a Helena Hunting review team member, but I remain honest and genuine in my reviews.

From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Helena Hunting comes a new story in her Pucked series. The untold story of Skye and Sidney, and the origin story where Vi and Miller are teens when their parents start dating and fall in love…

I accidentally grabbed the wrong drink at the coffee shop. On the upside, the hot guy it belonged to chased me down to kindly swap with me. On the down side, the reason I grabbed the wrong drink in the first place is because the hot guy had just caught me checking out his ass…sets.

In my defense, his rear view is rather magnificent.

In true, humiliating form, I word-vomited a bunch of horrible nonsense. Including an unnecessary explanation of the trauma I’d evaded thanks to his chasing me down. Nothing could ruin my lactose-intolerant day faster than my one true dairy.

I did not expect him to ask me out on a date after that.

I also didn’t expect the date to go well since my tendency to truth-vomit is high, and not everyone finds that quality endearing.

But apparently he does. Because he asks me out again.
And again.

Sidney Butterson (yes, it’s a weird last name) ticks all my boxes.
He’s smart, he’s funny, he’s employed and he’s ridiculously hot.
There’s one catch.

We’re both single parents. With teens.

And if our kids don’t like each other?
Well, we’re doomed.

* *Every 1001 Dark Nights novella is a standalone story. For new readers, it’s an introduction to an author’s world. And for fans, it’s a bonus book in the author’s series. We hope you’ll enjoy each one as much as we do.* *

Check out my more detailed thoughts below…

  • Characters: I adore all the Pucked characters so much! This is the first time we have been in Skye and Sidney’s heads and I was so excited for this prequel. For Skye, you cannot help but root for the strong single mom who really does best by her daughter. You can see where Violet gets so many of her character quirks from the lactose intolerance to the blurting of thoughts. Speaking of Vi, I loved the insight into teenage Violet, because what fan of Pucked does not have a soft spot for the quirky queen herself. We also got a peak at teenager Miller, through Sidney and oh boy was it fun to see the hockey star as a teen boy throwing rockous house parties. Finally a word of Sidney, the swoony gentleman who did not just sweep Skye off her feet but us all.
  • Pacing: This is billed as a novella, but do not fear it is quite a long one. I really enjoyed the length of time we spent with Skye and Sidney. So often these prequel stories are too short to really grow invested in the relationship and that was not the case with this one.
  • Romance: I loved Skye and Sidney so much, and from their coffee shop meet cute I was rooting for them! I loved all the spice Helena gave us in a prequel about the parents! It was a lovely amount of steamy and tension for a couple finding their second chance at love a bit later in life. It was also really refreshing to read a single-parent romance, wherein they aren’t just both single parents, but they are parenting teenagers. Often the trope just features little kids, but little adults throw in a whole new dynamic to building a relationship. Ultimately though for fans of the Pucked series, this will feel like returning home, it is so nostalgic and just a wonderful time.

Where It Begins receives five out of five stars.

Luca was a fan favourite and I was so excited to see where his fling with Angel could go. Fans of this series will love this story, as it is a great check-in on beloved characters and a tease of what is to come.

Snow Place Like LA cover. Features a huge palm tree with Christmas lights and an LA street in muted, pinks, oranges, teals, and light blues.

After Angel and Luca connected on the set of Duke the Halls and had a whirlwind romance in the literal snow globe of Christmas Notch, Vermont, Luca found himself falling in love. Hard. He’d never been one to believe in fate or true love, but one thing was certain: Angel was his person. He knew it as well as he knew the history of American figure skating. But when Angel left for an art school semester abroad without a word, Luca’s already brittle heart was broken. No one ghosted Luca. Unless he was in a haunted house.

But with the spring semester long over, Angel is back home in Los Angeles for the summer, and unfortunately for Luca, this big town is turning out to be smaller than either of them ever expected.

Check out my more detailed thoughts below…

  • Characters: For both Luca and Angel this story picks up where A Merry Little Meet Cute left off, with a movie wrapped and next plans up in the air. Luca returns to LA hoping to keep what started in Christmas Notch with Angel alive, but life has other plans. I was surprised how much of Luca’s character was dominated by self-doubt, but that is why having someone like Angel show Luca what his work was worth was so essential.
  • Setting: The story is predominately set in L.A. and actually includes some thoughts on its hustle culture and way of life which were refreshing to see. Rather than another romance that romanticizes the L.A. life. Plus I enjoyed all the cameos from the characters I already loved like Bianca and Sunny.
  • Pacing: This will be the perfect quick read for someone who is already a fan of this world. It is not an essential instalment, you can skip this and wait for the full-length book in the fall. If you want a speedy read it is perfect raunchy fun. Just one note, it is a single point of view with a focus on Luca and my preference is a dual point of view. I felt it was hard to know what was going on with Angel and to connect with him.
  • Romance: My favourite part of the story was the chemistry between Luca and Angel. They shared so many scenes together that weren’t just deliciously steamy, but emotionally heartwarming. A few of the romantic problems were solved with little conflict but that was the nature of the shorter story. Honestly, they were partner goals!

From Wall Street Journal bestselling author Devney Perry comes a new story in her Maysen Jar series…

Dear Diary,

My dad needs a girlfriend, and I’ve already picked her out.

Miss Adler would be perfect for him, right? She’s super pretty. She has the best smile and she gives the best hugs. And she’s, like, the most amazing teacher in the world.

Dad is my hero, but I can tell he’s lonely. He tries to hide it from me, but sometimes at night, when he thinks I’m asleep, I’ll sneak downstairs and find him sitting on the couch, staring at nothing. He’s never had a girlfriend, not since the divorce. Mom messed him up. She’s good at that.

They’re perfect for each other. I just know it. Now I only have to show them I’m right.

Wish me luck.

Katy

Check out my more detailed thoughts below…

  • Characters: Our leads are Josh and Della, a single dad and his daughter’s teacher. Josh is Katy’s dad and he was pretty damn great. He’s hardworking and determined. He is such a strong fighter for his daughter, in the face of a messy ex. Josh is very deserving to have his second chance at love, and Della was perfect for him. She teaches middle school and is loving, caring, and kind. She had harboured feelings for her colleague/roommate, but he’s only been showing some interest more recently. It is Della who loves frequenting the Maysen Jar.
  • Setting: The story is set in Deveny’s version of Bozeman, Montana. The Dandelion Diary is the return to the world of the Maysen Jar and I loved getting to check in on many of my favourite characters especially, Poppy.
  • Pacing: For being on the shorter side this was paced extremely well. The buildup of the relationship happened at the right story beats and was given ample breathing room. The ending was a bit rushed but that was necessary so we had more pages for character development and the characters evolving into more than friends.
  • Romance: I am such a sucker for characters so deserving of great love. Also in a single dad romance when the heroine falls hard for the kid, it is just so perfect! There was only a bit of steam, but with the constraints that makes sense. This had the heart of both Maysen Jar and the Coppersmith Farmhouse (loved the Prescott reference.)

The Dandelion Diary receives five out of five stars.

Another sapphic short story from Sierra Simone. Damn, she is so good at writing hot stories, steeped in the grandeur of a historical setting.

England is burning with Norman fires, and Tate—the youngest ever abbess of Far Hope Abbey—is determined to guard the abbey’s ancient secrets with her very life. Her life may be what it takes, however, for a Norman warlord known only as The Wolf is pillaging his way right to the abbey’s doors. But when The Wolf arrives, Tate finds not the brutal warrior she was expecting, but his even more brutal widow in his place, a cruel and beautiful woman who leads her dead husband’s men with a ferocity to rival that of her Viking ancestors. And after she sets eyes on Tate, it becomes clear that gold and silver aren’t the only things The Wolf wants to carry off into the night…

Check out my more detailed thoughts below…

  • Characters: Abbess Tate is in charge of Far Hope Abbey, she was put in charge recently as their numbers dwindled and she was the healthiest nun to lead the abbey. She is brave, headstrong, and loyal; going out of her way to protect Far Hope. This character really surprised me, meaning she was a lot more varied than expected. Do not be fooled by Tate’s pious label, she has some secrets that will shake up how you feel about her. So, Tate sacrifices herself to the clutches of the Wolf. All the characters in the story make the reader thinks we are meeting a man, instead, she is a ruthless widow. Such an intriguing character; one cannot but have empathy for this character and all the secrets she must keep.
  • Setting: We pick up with Tate and the Wolf as the Normans are invading England, the year is 1068 and we are just a few years away from the conclusion of the Norman conquest. This was such a unique setting! As a history degree holder, I am always a sucker for a historical setting. As this time period is nowhere near my specialty I find nothing to critique, so it was pure enjoyment for me and will be for many others. Sierra did such a good job of weaving in historical elements of the Norman conquest, even historical figures are small parts of this larger wlw love story. Fans of Sierra’s previous work will feel the Thornchapel vibes throughout this, and if you love Sierra’s other historical series such as Markham Hall.
  • Pacing: My small complaint with this story was the pacing. I found this short story lagged in spots. It felt on the longer side for a short story. But instead of this just flushing out the romance, I found I lost focus and was not encouraged to escape away into the story. I often read at a manic pace, this took me many days to read and it is not very long. If you like your short stories on the longer side you will really enjoy this.
  • Romance: I enjoyed the love story between Tate and Adelais, an enemies-to-lovers romance in a time period where largely no woman would have sought a coupling that fulfilled them. Tate and Adelais were finally getting the love and companionship they deserved. Plus this book is super hot, these characters have such great chemistry and not a single romantic scene disappoints. I love the most that they bonded over being morally grey, and how they had to deal with what was dealt to them in a world everchanging and riddled with upheaval and violence.

Villain I’d Like to Fuck receives four out of five stars.

She doesn’t want to fly, but it’s the only way to get to the research facility. Then her worst fears come true. A plane malfunction. A swift fall from the sky. And a heart-stopping crash. An emergency landing leaves them stranded. Then a shadow moves through the trees. They aren’t alone in the jungle. Check out my more detailed thoughts below… Characters: We are finally in Carter Morelli’s head and I could not be happier about it. He has always been very mysterious and I love that now we are finally getting some answers. He’s protective, adventurous, caring and might be a modern-day James Bond. He is masquerading as a biology professor, but he is not faking his love for all things Rhizomes. He is nerdy and I kinda love it. June Porter is our heroine, she is a Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer. We meet her a bit on edge about flying, and I already love that she is quite vulnerable and relatable. Setting: They survive a crash landing on an island, with no signal and sandy beaches. The setting is as mysterious as the men, both Carter himself and whoever shot down this plane. Pacing: This first part of the story flew by and all I want is to know more about Carter, June, whoever is out in the wilderness of the island and whoever shot down the plane. Romance: In just a few chapters these characters are already pushing each other. They have such great chemistry and share an electric first kiss. I am excited to see how this relationship develops as well as who will be the third member of the teased ménage? The Crash receives four out of five stars. Thank you to Skye Warren, Amelia Wilde and the team at Dangerous Press for the advance reader copy of The Crash, the prequel novella to Force of Nature.

Skye and Amelia working together, what more could we ask for! All this novella did is make me want the novel more!

I am a member of the Dangerous Press review team, but I stand by my reviews remaining honest and true.

Carter Morelli works alone, but his orders are clear. Pilot the small aircraft carrying the renowned photographer to a remote island.

June Porter wants to stay on solid land.

Abounding in power and wealth, and marked by moments of soul-searing passion, exquisite love, and tragic loss. But it is a testament to the strength of Lenora and Edward’s relationship in the face of their tragedy and loss. Christmas at the Castle: This story showcases Lenora and Edward meeting their son Thomas’ girlfriend for the first time. It was so lovely to see Thomas and Callista together. It was bittersweet as a fan of this series, I obviously know what happens. It’s All Right to Cry: Nicholas is told in this story about his parent’s plane disappearing and seeing his reaction and how he had to handle it was devastating. It made me want to cry. He Made Me a Queen: Then we switched to Lenora’s point of view and this story was phenomenal. I loved seeing the strength of Lenora and Edward’s relationship in the face of everything the world has thrown at them. Bloody Thank You Cards: I loved seeing a peek into Edward and Nicholas’s relationship. Plus a little bit of a look into how flirty Lenora and Edward still are even as they get older. Good Night Sweet Prince: I was dreading this story, the story of Lenora losing Edward. All of these little stories really sold me on the greatest of their love. Now and Always: Now we get Nicholas’ point of view on his grandfather’s death. It was a lovely story and had such a nice sensitive moment between Nicholas, his brother Henry and his grandmother Queen Lenora. A Little Thing Like a Crown: This story occurs during Royally Screwed. It was interesting to get the behind-the-scenes of how Lenora was processing Nicholas’ choices. I did find it a bit creepy how Lenora talks too intently to her deceased husband. I get why Emma Chase did this so there was dialogue in the story. I Don’t Want to Say I Told You: Features Lenora coming to terms with Nicholas’ choice to pursue love and abdicate. It is interesting because after all these stories you understand better where Lenora is coming from. How after her son and daughter-in-law died she poured all of her energy into shaping Nicholas into the perfect heir. My Greatest Joy: This story was very very touching. I especially loved Lenora’s moment with Jane. Beyond the Palace: This was a nice way to wrap up this short story book. I really loved getting this behind-the-scenes look at Lenora’s point of view on the events of her past, present, and future. Royally Remembered receives four out of five stars. Mr. Right Now…

I’ve got a problem. After a dozen failed dates – but who’s counting – I’m done hunting for Mr. Right. I’m more than ready to cash in my V-card, and at this point I’ll gladly hand it over to Mr. Right Now. When I go out with my friends for a night on the town, I bump into the perfect candidate. Captain Romance…

I don’t have luck on my side when it comes to romance. That’s why I’m laser focused on my career as a sports reporter and making a mark as a woman in this tough field.
When one of the city’s baseball stars asks me to spend a night on the town, I have to draw the line. Just friends, I say.
He’s good with that.
Very good with that.
So good that I start falling for my new friend.
Of all the swoony, charming, thoughtful men in this big city, why is the one I want thoroughly off-limits? But if I want a chance with the guy they call Captain Romance, I’m going to have to put more than my heart on the line.

Linde’s: One Cruel Wedding Night asks is if an arranged marriage equals no love. This story features Camden, the heir to a hotel fortune and Katherine who is now penniless. Her father committed fraud and now her only option is this arranged marriage. This villain romance had great sexual tension. I loved how it was set at their wedding and the hot scenes that came with it. 4 stars. Skye Warren’s: Two Turtle Doves features Gabriel and Avery fan favourite characters of Skye’s. I have not read any of her Endgame series, I feel bad that I could not appreciate all the character cameos. For those who have this is definitely going to be a treat for you. 3 stars. Fiona Cole’s: Goner is the best story in this anthology! Fuck I loved this story. First off I am a huge fan of Fiona and the world of Voyeur, so yes I am biased. There is a great cameo from a beloved couple. They get in the mix with the new characters and it is a super hot scene. I love the setting of blur and I could read like ten more books in this world. Amara and Atlas have great chemistry. This book has everything, F/F/M, F/F/F, and M/F. 5 stars. Giana Darling’s: Swan Song is about Finnegan aka Curtains of the Fallen MC. This story was pretty good but I expected more from Giana. I am a huge fan of her motorcycle romances and I wanted this to be steamier. I did really enjoy the characters and the mystery surrounding them. 4 stars. Claire Contreras’s: Five Golden Rings is Deliah and Rory’s story. This story was not very memorable. The sex was hot though. I loved how the rings referenced in the title were incorporated into the story. 3 stars. Nikki Sloane’s: On the Sixth Day is a story of a throuple. Clay, Travis & Lilith are from The Architect. I enjoyed this story so much, I plan to pick up their story. Their sex scene was incredibly hot. I loved the balance between the sex and plot in this story. 5 stars. Nana Malone’s: Four Calling Birds is Bryna and Lucas’ story. I did enjoy that this story had a heist aspect to it and how it led to a very hot hookup. But overall I did not get super invested in this story. 3 stars. C.D. Reiss’s: Nine Ladies Dancing was a bit of an odd story. It really did not click with me, as I did not like any of the characters. It took me forever to read and it had my putting the book down rather than devouring the story as I should be. 2 stars. Sierra Simone’s: My Present This Year is about step-siblings Nick and Nora. This story is so hot and well of course it is it is written by the queen of steamy smut Sierra Simone. This story was my second favourite in the anthology. With perfect pacing, the tension was built between step-siblings who have been struggling to keep their hands to themselves. You cannot help but buy into their feelings and start to cheer them on. 5 stars. Laurelin Paige’s: Ten Dirty Deeds exudes tension and oozed steaminess. I loved the concept of the 10 deeds and how it was incorporated. I know Laurelin has written about these characters before, but I have never read that story. Sabrina and Donovan are from Dirty Flirty Rich Men, and they seem like a very fun, hot and dirty couple. 4 stars. M. Malone’s: Gift Me is Noelle and Deacon’s adorably nerdy romance. I loved this romance of two people who have been pining for each other for quite a while. This story was one of the sweetest and most romantic ones in the anthology rather than something sexy or steamy. 4 stars. Angelina M. Lopez’s: Twelve Drummers is Sabrina Ramirez’s story. This story was really unique and its inspiration was super cool. This Aztec-inspired tale is one of the steamiest in the anthology. The hotness of this story is quite something, but its lack of plot keeps the rating a bit lower for me. 3 stars. Twelve Naughty Days receives four out of five stars. The Naughty, The Nice and The Nanny, Three Bells, Two Bows and One Brother’s Best Friend and A Partridge and a Pregnancy release on November 4th! These are some of the best Holiday stories I have read in a very long time. All romance fans will love these couples and their love stories. I am a Willa Nash review team member, but I stand by my reviews remaining honest and true. “One week with one little girl—an angel, according to my staffing agency. Acting as the short-term nanny for a single dad should have been an easy way to make some extra cash. Until I show up for my first day and face off with a demon disguised as a seven-year-old girl wearing a red tutu and matching glitter slippers. Oh, and her father? My temporary boss? Maddox Holiday. The same Maddox Holiday I crushed on in high school. The same Maddox Holiday who didn’t even know I existed. And the same Maddox Holiday who hasn’t set foot in Montana for years because he’s been too busy running his billionaire empire. Enduring seven days is going to feel like scaling the Himalayas in six-inch heels. Toss in the Holiday family’s annual soiree, and Christmas Eve nightmares really do come true. But I can do anything for a week, especially for this paycheck, even if it means wrangling the naughty, impressing the nice, and playing the nanny.” “I pride myself in being grounded. Sure, I’ve had my share of childhood fantasies. Winning an Oscar. Winning the lottery. Winning an Olympic medal for an athletic talent I have yet to discover. But the only fantasy I ever thought might actually happen was winning my brother’s best friend. Heath Holiday. My crush on him has ebbed and flowed over the years, but the day I started working for his construction company was the day I smothered it for good. Sort of. Mostly. It was on my to-do list. Making it a priority would have been easier had he not arrived at his family’s annual Christmas party looking ridiculously handsome in a suit. Then he kissed me. We stepped into an alternate universe and he kissed me. I assumed the next day I’d just be Guy’s little sister again. The office newbie. Our kiss forgotten. Except he keeps showing up at my house. With gifts. A gold bracelet carrying three jingling bells. Two dainty jeweled earrings, each shaped as a bow. And finally, he brought himself. One brother’s best friend, asking if I can keep a secret.” “There are a lot of places I’d rather spend Christmas Eve morning than on a cold, snowy sidewalk outside someone else’s home. I’d kill to be sitting beside a fireplace, drinking cocoa, wearing flannel pajamas and reading a book. Instead, I’m here, standing in front of my one-night stand’s house, working up the courage to ring the doorbell and tell him I’m pregnant. I hate that term—one-night stand. It sounds so cheap and sleezy. Tobias Holiday is neither of those things. He’s handsome and caring. Witty and charismatic. And once, a long time ago, he was mine. Our one-night reunion was only supposed to be a hookup. A fling with an old lover. A parting farewell before I moved to London and put my feelings for him an ocean away. How exactly am I supposed to explain that to Tobias that I’m having a baby? His baby? Maybe I could sing it. He always loved the silly songs I made up in the shower. Three French hens, two turtle doves. And a partridge and a pregnancy.”  Check out my more detailed thoughts below… General Thoughts: These were some of the best holiday shorts I have ever read. They were neither too short nor too long. I loved the setting of Bozeman, Montana and how it was depicted as an ever-growing town. I loved that the stories were about brothers and the interconnectedness was phenomenal. These were all perfect examples of how to do these tropes and do them well. From falling for the nanny to an accidental pregnancy to falling in love with your best friend’s brother. There are many scenes and characters that overlap and it was really nice to see some important scenes from more than one point of view. The Naughty, The Nice and The Nanny: Natalie is a nanny and Maddox hires her to watch his daughter Violet for a week. They have an immediate attraction, as Natalie kinda crushed on Maddox during high school. I loved the dynamic between Violet and Natalie. I also really liked how this book examined step-parents. It really eloquently explored the influence these parental figures can have on our lives. Three Bells, Two Bows and One Brother’s Best Friend: Stella has always crushed on Heath, but he is her brother’s best friend. Plus Heath is now her boss now too. Heath has been crushing on Stella too. Once they started hooking up, I loved how they were so insatiable. What really drove the plot was the secrets they were keeping from each other and everyone around them. I really liked how this one was paced. A Partridge and a Pregnancy: Eva and Tobias dated in college, but she wanted to move away from Montana while he wanted to stay. They reconnect years later and have a one-night stand. But surprise! Now she is pregnant! I loved watching as these two fell victim to their whims and their feelings for each other. The story has its frustrating moments because you cannot help but root for them and they just will not commit. The Naughty, The Nice and The Nanny receives five out of five stars. Three Bells, Two Bows and One Brother’s Best Friend receives five out of five stars. A Partridge and a Pregnancy receives fives out of five stars. You can pick up the stories here.
