Karina Halle’s Black Sunshine ARC Review

Thank you to Karina Halle and Valentine PR for the advance reader copy of Black Sunshine, the first paranormal romance from the author.

My excitement for this release is unmatched! Karina has never written a vampire book and the way she documented her writing process online got me so pumped for this book. A perfect book for fans of her horror work like Experiment in Terror and also her darker romances like The Artists Trilogy.

Check out the Goodreads synopsis…

“All Lenore Warwick wants for her 21st birthday is to hang out with her friends, finish her second year at Berkeley with flying colors, and maybe catch the eye of a hot musician playing a show at a club that she can now (legally) get into.

Unfortunately, fate has other plans for her.

A week before her birthday, she’s kidnapped by the brooding and dangerous stranger with cold eyes and a lethal touch, who has been stalking her on San Francisco’s fog-shrouded streets. Absolon Stavig isn’t your average criminal though. He’s a centuries-old vampire who’s caught between wanting to kill Lenore and wanting to save her.

You see Lenore, too, is a vampire.

She just doesn’t know it yet.

Taken by a pair of vampire slayers when she was just an infant, Lenore was raised never knowing her true nature. All Lenore knows is that she has (normal) parents who love her, that she’s exceptionally smart, and she’s squeamish around blood. But once she turns twenty-one, she’ll fully turn into a vampire, and Solon hopes he’ll be there to guide her, opening her eyes to her deepest hunger…both sexual and otherwise.

But this turning can’t be kept a secret. Soon both slayers and vampires are hunting Lenore, with only Solon and his unpredictable motley crew of vampires to save her.

If they don’t kill her first.

Black Sunshine is a dark adult standalone romance with a paranormal twist, about sex, love, secrets, and revenge, set in contemporary San Francisco.”

Check out my more detailed thoughts below…

  • Characters: Lenore our protagonist is about to turn 21. She’s a super unique character, she’s a university student at Berkely studying Ancient Eqyptian and Near Eastern Art & Archelogy. Lenore is such a cool person, decked out in tattoos, jewellery, and killer fashion. Unbeknownst to Lenore, her parents aren’t really her parents rather they are vampire hunters who murdered her birth parents. Lenore did grow up in a loving household though, her parents did not realize the Vamps had a child so when they found baby Lenore they took her in. They raised her as their own and bided their time to see if her true nature would rear itself. Lenore is such a driven person, she wants to get a Ph.D. to become a museum coordinator. She really has her life and who she is figured out until Absolon enters it. Solon is a very powerful and very old vampire. He is a classic alpha male, so he has struggled to open up and let people in. He seemed like a really lonely man, and that Lenore might be the person to break down these walls.
  • Setting: The story is set in modern-day San Francisco with a little urban fantasy twist. The city is the perfect backdrop for a story riddled with vampires and mysteries. San Fran brings a very creepy house and a cool bar. The house in this story almost became a character on its own. Despite its creepiness, it really felt like the only safe place in the entire world and I loved that juxtaposition. Black Sunshine the title, does refer to a setting of sorts in the story, but you are going to have to read the story to find out more info cause I ain’t spoiling you!
  • Pacing: The story was paced pretty well overall. I was a bit concerned about the speed the two characters were falling for one another, but because of their history, I guess it is not truly insta-love. The ending does leave things a bit open for more, plus there were so many interesting side characters Karina could do a lot with.
  • Romance: Lenore and Absolon are such an interesting couple. If you are a fan of Karina’s other work I would almost compare them to Matteo and Vera from Love in English. Lenore has not had much luck with love and has had some very casual things in the last few years. So when she meets Solon, it is the immediate attraction to him that shocks her the most. Solon is your classic alpha type who is not forthcoming with his feelings and is also got his mind made up that he is not good for anyone. These two bring a lot of angst but also boatloads of chemistry. This is a very hot book so get prepared folks!!

Black Sunshine receives four out of five stars.
