Lauren Blakely’s Scoring with Him ARC Review

Thank you to Lauren Blakely and her team for the advance reader copy of Scoring with Him, the first story in the Men of Summer series. This story releases on July 9th!

I have very much enjoyed Lauren Blakley’s previous M/M love stories. I was also intrigued by the concept of this specific story. As it is being told over two books and will take place over five years. She rarely puts out things that take place over multiple books so I am ready to get hooked on Grant and Declan.

I am a member of Lauren Blakley’s review team, but I stand by my reviews remaining honest and true.

“A sexy, angsty, emotional MM sports romance that’s all kinds of forbidden from #1 NYT Bestseller Lauren Blakely!

Falling for the rookie wasn’t part of the plan.
As a pro athlete, I have one unbreakable rule when it comes to men — Don’t date another baseball player.
Good thing I haven’t been tempted once in four years in the majors.
Until the day a rising star walks into my locker room. Outgoing, affable, and sexy-as-sin, Grant has confidence and talent for miles. He seems to get me too, maybe because we each have our fair share of secrets and scars — ones we’ll both fight to protect.
But, I’ve got far too much trouble in my past to want to bring any into my present.
All the more reason to resist the kind of dirty deeds his lips and eyes promise.
Even after I plant a scorching, hot kiss on the rookie one night after a game.
Even after he sends me the world’s sexiest selfie.
But when Grant reveals his biggest secret, I’m so damn ready to rip up the rulebook.
Turns out he’s a virgin and he wants me to help him get around all the bases.
The only rule? Don’t fall in love with him as we go.

Scoring with Him is book one in the Men of Summer Duet. This romance between two professional athletes spans five epic years and continues in Winning With Him. Teddy Hamilton and Jacob Morgan narrate the books.

Check out my more detailed thoughts below…

  • Characters: Grant and Declan are both baseball players. Grant is a sentimental, tattooed, and pierced rookie. He is only twenty-two and this is his first season playing professional baseball. Contrasting him is Declan, who is twenty-six and in his fifth season with the San Francisco Cougars. We open our story with Declan swearing off dating as the players enter training camp and the eventual season.
  • Setting: The boys play for San Francisco but the story is set in Arizona. As that is where they have gone off for training camp. The majority of the book takes place either in their early morning workouts out on the field. Or in either of their rooms in the hotel the team invaded.
  • Pacing: This story is only the first instalment in this duology. So the story is a much slower pace than some of Lauren’s other books. I really enjoyed this though! I felt like the relationship really had the time to develop through multiple stages. They could start with harmless flirting, then they could start to pursue their romance.
  • Romance: Declan and Grant were both hesitant to explore a relationship. I loved their banter, their connection, and ultimately their slow descent into bed together. Declan has a nasty history of an ex-boyfriend who he had to dump during his rookie season. This not only guides his desire to avoid dating, Declan cannot help but discourage Grant from falling for someone during his rookie season. If you want a slow-burn romance that burns hotter and heavier closer to the end, this is the love story for you!

Scoring with Him receives four out of five stars.
