Karina Halle’s Nightwolf ARC Review

Thank you to Karina Halle and the team at Valentine PR for the advance reader copy of Nightwolf, Amethyst and Wolf’s love story.

Ever since Wolf and Amethyst waltzed onto the page of Black Sunshine, I knew I would want to read their story. I am happy Karina Halle was just as excited to write their story as I was to read it. What fantasy reader out there is not a sucker for a human girl falling in love with the dangerous yet alluring vampire.

“My name is Amethyst DeMille and I’m in love with a vampire.
Sounds complicated, doesn’t it?
Yet the fact that he’s a sexy, centuries-old blood-drinking vampire isn’t what makes our relationship complicated.
It’s because we live in the same house together, work at the same exclusive club together, and he happens to be my best friend with absolutely no idea how I feel about him.
I mean, sure he’s probably seen me give him heart eyes more than once. Wolf is not only a deadly, charismatic vampire with great persuasion skills, he also happens to be built like a Nordic God, all solid muscle and chiseled bone structure and haunting eyes that I sometimes think tell me more than he wants me to know. He’s the type of guy most women find themselves falling for (and not just because they might end up his next meal).
But despite the simmering sexual tension and yearning between us, I know there’s no way I’ll ever be able to tell him how I feel. After all, I’m a human and he’s a vampire and he’s told me more than once that those love stories never end well.
Too bad my heart doesn’t know the difference.”

Check out my more detailed thoughts below…

  • Characters: Amethyst was such an awesome protagonist. I loved her so freaking much. She is the human amongst all the vampires. For the last eight years, she has pined over her best friend Wolf. Watching her get all blushy around him was so adorable. Wolf made me fall in love with him so incredibly quickly. The story opens with his memory of losing his father, something that happened to Karina recently. The way grief sits with him and the way he processes it, it felt so raw and real. Wolf is kind, caring and loyal. I loved how he could go from teasing Ameyst to being her shoulder to cry on in the next scene.
  • Setting: The story is set in San Francisco. If you read Black Sunshine and The Blood is Love you will be very familiar with the Dark Eyes club. A vampire sanctuary in the heart of San Francisco. While it is Wolf’s sanctuary, it is Amethyst’s fascination. I loved the dynamic of her and her mother living and working in the Dark Eyes. Her mother is an awesome character and I loved how she became a motherly figure for Wolf, Solon, and Lenore.
  • Pacing: This story was the perfect length. Do not get me wrong I was sad when it was over because I never wanted to leave Wolf and Amethyst.
  • Romance: I really connected to Amethyst and how she had been searching her whole life for someone who saw her for her, who would love her for her. The beauty and the curse of a friends-to-lovers story are that the love of your life has been right in front of Amethyst and Wolf for such a long time! This romance was phenomenal. I was so invested in this relationship working out regardless of any roadblocks the world threw at them. This book is one of Karina’s bests. It astounds me that she was able to channel her grief into this groundbreaking love story. It is not just a love story between Amethyst and Wolf, it is a love story between a daughter and a mother, and a father and son.

Nightwolf receives five out of five stars.
