Broken Vow is officially my second favourite in this series, so far! If you love either mafia romance or cowboy romance, this one is both!

He’ll protect her…whether she likes it or not. Riona Griffin is gorgeous, intelligent, and iron-willed. My perfect woman, except she hates my guts. She thinks she doesn’t need anybody. But she needs me. She’s being hunted by an assassin who never misses his mark. I’m going to stay by her side, day and night, keeping her safe. Riona thinks that’s a fate worse than death, but I know she’ll learn to love me. If this hitman wants to kill her, he’ll have to go through me first. Broken Vow is the wild and dangerous fifth installment in the Brutal Birthright series. It’s a standalone bodyguard mafia romance, with a HEA and no cliffhanger. Contains steamy scenes.

Check out my more detailed thoughts below…

  • Characters: Riona Griffin’s story has been one of my most anticipated since I started reading the Brutal Birthright series. I knew early on I was going to love Riona, in the other instalments she is presented as the workaholic, ice queen sister to Griffin. Being in her head allows the reader to really understand how she balances her fierceness and determination with a whole lot more to it. She’s one of Sophie Lark’s most flushed-out characters, Riona is so focused on taking care of everyone else and her career that she has little left to care for herself. Enter Raylan, her new bodyguard and a bit of a cowboy! I loved him and his family so much, he is a very different hero for this series as he is the first and only one who is not in the mafia directly himself. Rather, he is hired to be Riona’s bodyguard because her life is in danger. He was the perfect counterpart to Riona, ready to match her fierceness.
  • Setting: The setting is such a fun part of Broken Vow. Early on it is apparent that the city of Chicago is not safe enough for Riona so they must escape to Raylan’s family ranch. I loved the little, small-town cowboy romance inside a larger mafia romance series, it was like an escape inside an escape.
  • Pacing: Sophie Lark writes these incredibly easy to breeze through books. This series is just so damn bingeable to read, I basically read Broken Vow back-to-back with Bloody Heart in the same night. The pacing is so strong in the first two thirds, due to their length these books often need to be wrapped up rather quickly at the end. Yet I can overlook that in the instalments that really shine bright like this one and Brutal Prince.
  • Romance: The relationship is very opposites attract, with grumpy sunshine vibes. Riona is the grump, and Raylan is the sunshine. Both characters really push each other because of this and bring out the best in each other. The sex scenes in this book are on another level for this series, with some light BDSM elements for those who are into reading that. Of course, I have always been a sucker for bodyguard romance in each and every form it has come in and this was a great take on it.

Broken Vow receives five out of five stars.

When you get a second chance, you don’t wait for a third…

Simone Solomon lives in a gilded cage. She’s been raised to wealth, privilege, and above all, obedience.

Hiding in the back of a limousine, dreading another tedious gala, Simone is abducted by a mafioso who intended to steal a car, not a girl.

Dante Gallo looks like a beast and behaves like one, too — until he lays eyes on Simone. Their attraction is irresistible, even if they’re completely wrong for each other.

Simone is willing to risk everything for Dante — until the disastrous night that splits them apart.

Fate grants her one more chance to reconnect with the man she can’t forget. But Simone has a secret… a mistake she fears Dante will never forgive…

Check out my more detailed thoughts below…

  • Characters: The Gallo this instalment centers around is Dante Gallo and his second chance at love with Simone Soloman. I enjoyed these characters but I was not as invested as I have been. I did struggle with some of Simone’s choices, I do not want to give too much detail to avoid spoilers, but she was put in some difficult situations. Dante not holding that against her too much is indicative of what a great guy he was. He was easy to fall for and I loved reading all his interactions with his siblings.
  • Setting: Sophie Lark’s mafia world is set in Chicago, and it does feel like coming home to a cast of characters that I love.
  • Pacing: I just find these books so incredibly easy to fly through. This story is told in two parts, with a significant time jump in between. I was enraptured by the first part especially and how the characters met got me intrigued right from the start. This is paced so quickly though that at times it sure helps you read fast, but I did wonder if there were parts of the story that could have been flushed out a bit more.
  • Romance: From the moment Dante and Simone meet in the most unlikely of circumstances I was cheering them on. I adored their early courtship, the sneaking out to see each other and of course the scaling of the balcony such a classic. Sophie Lark writes incredibly hot people, in hot scenes, with perfect accompanying art from Line Maria Eriksen. After being so attached to the characters in the first part of the book, naturally I was so invested in their second chance not just at love but at family.

Bloody Heart receives four out of five stars.

Thank you to Sophie Lark, Raincoast, and Bloom Books for the advance reader copy of Savage Lover, the third book in the Brutal Birthright series.

I have been loving this series, as we hit halfway Aida and Callum remain my favourites but I loved the wild ride that Camille and Nero took me on.

“Two people who believe they’re unworthy of love… until they meet each other.

Camille Rivera is drowning. Her father’s sick, her brother’s in deep with a dirty cop, and her mechanic shop is failing.

Nero Gallo is the neighborhood psychopath. As vicious as he is gorgeous, Camille has watched him burn through every girl in a ten-mile radius, breaking hearts and never, ever getting attached.

Which is why she can’t believe it when Nero saves her from a seriously sticky situation. They’ve lived next to each other all their lives — is it possible she never really knew him at all?

Camille is about to learn that the only thing more dangerous than trusting Nero is falling for him.”

Check out my more detailed thoughts below…

  • Characters: I adored Camille, she’s incredibly loyal almost to a fault. Hence, she gets caught up in some nasty things to defend her brother. She contrasts so well with Nero, who was originally the Gallo sibling I was least interested in. I was totally surprised at how quickly I got attached to him and wanted him to succeed, get the girl and get the money! I am not a car-obsessed person but if you are a car girlie, you are going to love this book even more.
  • Setting: The story is set in Chicago and features a large cast of mafia families. This is the least mafia-centric of the stories so far. I did miss the dynamics of the larger family, but at the same time, it really felt like we got our characters on a deeper level. Even something as simple as Nero spent a decent amount of time with Sebastian, so I feel like I know another one of Aida’s brothers a bit better. This book is not about mafia politics though so if you read this series for that you may be slightly disappointed.
  • Pacing: I find these stories just so damn easy to devour. I could have read it in one setting if time had permitted instead, I had to sneak pages throughout the day whenever I could.
  • Romance: Camille and Nero are opposites that attracted so damn well. Plus, they were just so damn hot together. But this instalment felt like the slowest of slow burn of any of Sophie Lark’s books I have read yet. It was lovely to get so much time for this relationship to develop, but sadly I did feel like the romantic scenes do suffer as there are not enough pages left for some more sexy times.

Savage Lover receives four out of five stars.

Thank you to Sophie Lark, Sourcebooks, Bloom Book, Raincoast, and NetGalley for the advance reader copy of the re-release of Stolen Heir, the second interconnected standalone in the Brutal Birthright series.

While I was reading Brutal Prince I was so excited to get in Nessa’s head. Once I found out that this installment was about her I was ecstatic. I was even more interested to get to read Sophie’s take on the classic mafia romance trope, kidnapping.

They Murdered My Father, So I Stole Their Daughter…

She’s my captive, my little ballerina who dances only for me.

Nessa is sweet and innocent. She doesn’t deserve any of this. But that’s how our world works – the wolves eat the lambs, no matter how gentle they may be.

I’ll use her to get my revenge. Unless I give in to my hunger first…

“Stolen Heir” is the dark and gothic second act of the “Brutal Birthright” series. It’s a stand-alone Enemies to Lovers Romance, complete with HEA and no cliffhangers. It contains blazing hot bedroom scenes for mature readers only!!!

Check out my more detailed thoughts below…

  • Characters: Nessa is the only daughter of the Griffin Irish mafia family, and she’s been kept out of the business until now. She is kidnapped by Mikolaj, or Miko the head of the Polish Bratva. His character is dark, and it stems from some messed-up familial losses. Like many mafia men, he is fiercely loyal and the Polish Bratva had more of a found family vibe than the Gallo and Griffin families did which I enjoyed. When we meet Nessa she is struggling to advocate for herself and has been fading into the background. Being locked inside Miko’s house actually helped Nessa fly free. Her confidence grew after getting out from under her overbearing family. I do love that family of hers very much though. Throughout this book, we got snippets of Aida and Callum as a married couple and that warmed my heart. Along with little teases of some of the Gallo boys to come and I am so excited for Nero next.
  • Setting: This mafia romance is set in Chicago, where different families are vying for dominance in the windy city. This time we got a deeper look at the Polish and Russian bratva which make the Irish and Italian mafia families look super chill in comparison. I love how this world expands, more characters get drawn in, and more people join the extended Gallo/Griffin crowd.
  • Pacing: I cannot help but engulf these stories, the first half in particular I just could not stop reading. I did find the story started to wrap up too quickly at the end, I would have especially loved a bit more time for our characters to fall in love. It’s natural though in these shorter novels that a few things are rushed to ensure you get a nice bow at the end.
  • Romance: This romance is structured as a Beauty and the Beast retelling, with Stockholm Syndrome and all. I love Beauty and the Beast retellings in any form, and a mafia kidnapping romance was the perfect setting. Nessa and Miko were hot together, and I want to ensure potential readers that Nessa makes the first move and Miko never threatens to touch her without her permission. Sophie writes mafia with a bit of an edge but keeps consent as key in this one. I felt pity for Miko from the opening pages, I am so happy his ballerina could sweep him off his feet and show him that he deserved love in his life. For Nessa, I loved that her relationship brought out the best in her, helping her grow into a strong woman in a chaotic mafia family.

Stolen Heir receives four out of five stars.

In their struggle for dominance, who will go up in flames first?

Check out my more detailed thoughts below…

  • Characters: I love the spitfire that is Aida Gallo! She is mischievous, passionate, and loyal. I love the way she pushed all the men in her life from all her brothers to her new husband. He is Callum and he is an interesting character. He has many of the traits classically associated with a mafia hero: arrogant, dominant, and violent – but he’s also bookish. The beauty of a mafia romance about two warring families is that we had so many great side characters. Aida’s brothers are doubt horrible human beings but I cannot wait to get in their heads in subsequent books.
  • Setting: I love the Chicago setting and the dynamics of different mafia groups all vying for dominance. Italians, Irish, Polish, and Russian gangs all in one book! I love the dynamics of these huge families making deals especially some marriage pacts like in this story.
  • Pacing: I read the first half in a blink of an eye. Sophie did such a good job in setting up not just Aida and Callum in the early chapters but all of her main leads for the story. I was intrigued right away by the naive Nessa and was delighted to see that the next book is hers.
  • Romance: Damn Aida and Callum are hot, literal sparks fly from the first time they were in a scene together. Their first sex scene may be one of the hottest shower sex scenes I have ever read. I found myself getting emotionally invested very quickly and couldn’t help but root for them as they became more emotionally invested in one another.

Brutal Prince receives five out of five stars.

The final book in the 365 Days series. Well well well folks, I saw this on NetGalley and I just had to because curiosity killed the cat. The global phenomenon and USA TODAY bestselling inspiration behind the Netflix film of the same name—the 365 Days series—continues as it follows the sizzling story of Laura and Massimo. As the wife of Don Massimo Torricelli, one of the most dangerous Mafia bosses in Sicily, Laura’s life is a roller coaster. She is often at risk, the potential target of Massimo’s unscrupulous enemies who will stop at nothing to destroy the powerful man. And when Laura is seriously injured in an attack, pregnant and fighting to survive, Massimo faces the toughest decision of his life. What will his life be without Laura? Will he be able to raise their child alone? What will the fate of his family be, and whose 365 days may come to a close? Check out my more detailed thoughts below… Characters: It is time for the final instalment and our characters have not changed much. Their worse traits have only been amplified but that was Blanka’s doing. There’s an author’s note at the end where she literally refers to Laura as stupid. And oh boy is she ever, many times throughout this book. Massimo’s toxic alpha-ness got even more stifling. Ogla remains the most entertaining character and really the only one I can stand. Setting: This story is set all over the place. So naturally, we spend a lot of time in Sicily and Poland, but there was one section that had my fave setting. We escape off to Lagos, Portugal at one point and I love Portugal so at least I got something out of this book. Pacing: This book feels like it drags. It took forever for me to finish. If I was not incredibly curious about how this ended, I would have abandoned the ship. I have consistently had the same problems with the writing style. I could not tell you if this is a problem with translation, maybe it reads better in Polish. I am not the type to fall asleep while reading and I did that multiple times while reading this. Romance: It was so nice to see Laura begin to realize that Massimo was not some hot and sultry mystery man. That really he is toxic. Nacho at many times seemed suspicious too. Realistically if I was Laura I probably would have run back to Poland, many books ago. But she does fall victim to wanting the wealth and lavish lifestyle that these mafia men can provide. I do like Blanka’s overall message of being selfish in love, don’t settle and don’t excuse bad behaviour. The Next 365 Days receives two out of five stars. Well, I did not say much good about 365 Days but the cliffhanger at the end sure made me want to read more. So when I saw this ARC up for grabs I decided why the hell not. “The steamy and thrilling story of Laura and Massimo continues in this unputdownable sequel to the international bestseller 365 Days—the inspiration behind Netflix’s blockbuster movie. Laura Biel’s new life in Sicily looks like the perfect fairy tale: a grand wedding, a wealthy and devoted husband, a baby on the way, and lavish luxury complete with servants, extravagant cars, and seaside palazzos. Yes, all of this would be perfect, except for the fact that Laura is constantly surrounded by gangsters as the threat of her kidnapping looms large. Laura is about finally discover what it means to be married to the most dangerous man in Italy.” Check out my more detailed thoughts below… Characters: Both Laura and Massimo bugged me throughout this book in their own special ways. Laura made me want to strangle her and yell wtf in her face. Without spoiling you she is just a big hypocrite. While Laura’s character at least tries to go through so development. For example, she exerted herself more and I did like that. Massimo being in love and having a baby has not changed him one bit. He was such a misogynist when it came to having a boy over a girl. This is a minor spoiler but it is at the very very beginning of the novel, that Massimo messed with Laura’s birth control. That is never cool and I was livid with him for the rest of the story. The best character in this story is Olga, thank god for her, she made it a bit more bearable. I liked Domenico in the first book and then as this book went on I got annoyed with him too. Setting: The setting jumps around quite a bit in this instalment, mostly from Poland to Italy. I do love being in Sicily but wish they explored the setting more. Especially when Olga came to visit it produced the perfect opportunity. Pacing: The pacing was weird. This book felt way too long. The events seemed to happen in a whack kind of order. I liked the pacing the movie set up better than the book. Some of the events that come in the latter part of this book are already set up by the movie. This Day ended on a cliffhanger so yes they got me hooked to see where book three goes. Romance: I cannot believe I am going to say this. This book had too much sex. The balance was way better in the first instalment. As they just kept having sex, it lost all its impact and the scenes began to blend together. I did like that Laura was getting pushier in bed. It was nice to see them swap the dynamics from time to time. But honestly, this book was either Laura and Massimo having sex or Laura running away to somewhere cause of a misunderstanding, there was nothing in between. This Day receives two out of five stars. Thank you again to Atria and NetGalley for the review opportunity. Thank you for reading and supporting my blog!

So if you are looking for one with a nice balance of enjoyable characters you are going to care about and some good steam, do not read 365 Days. I did not like Laura or Massimo very much and I see how uncomfy this book can make many readers. If you want good mafia romance I would highly recommend either Giana Darling’s Anti-Heroes in Love duet or any of the books in Katee Robert’s O’Malley world including the Bastard’s Betrayal. Setting: The setting is mostly Italy. I am biased when I say that I love Italy. Yet I do think more could have been done with this setting. I did enjoy time on the yacht, that was sure fun. Pacing: I have to start off by complaining about the translation. Reading this was quite rough. I got used to it after a while but I should not have had to. I do not know if the book reads better in its original Polish or if the writing itself is just not very good. It made me put the book down for a few months and only pick it back up again when I received an ARC of book two. I also found it hard to get into because I had already seen the movie. Once I was further into it and things began to differ, I was a bit more entertained. Romance: We all knew this book would be pretty damn steamy. Some of the scenes read even more steamy than how they were depicted on screen. The movie almost had to hold back from depicting things as is. In terms of a healthy relationship or even having a desire to cheer these two on, I really did not like them. 365 Days receives two out of five stars. This book releases on August 25th! I have adored every single Katee Robert book I have read and so despite never having read The O’Malleys, I decided to pick up this spinoff series. I am ready for this mafia romance to rock my world. Check out the Goodreads synopsis… “She thought it was love. Rose Romanov is a mafia princess, and everything that entails. Violently over-protective parents. A giant extended family, all ready to kill anyone who looks at her wrong. Learning to run a business that isn’t exactly on the right side of the law. So, naturally, when she meets a nice guy who isn’t in the life, she falls hard… Right up until she discovers her new boyfriend isn’t a civilian at all. But he betrayed her. When Dante Verducci was sent on an undercover mission to evaluate the Romanov family for weakness, he never expected to have an instant connection with their unlikely heir. There’s something fierce and feral about Rose that calls to him. They’re alike, even if they’re both lying to each other during the months they date. Before he could figure out a new plan, Rose finds out who he really is, dumps him, and immediately enters an engagement with the heir of a rival family. Yeah, no, that’s not going to work for Dante. Now he’ll do anything to reclaim her. Even go to war.” Check out my more detailed thoughts below… Characters: Rose Romanov is the heir of the Romanov mafia family. She is the daughter of Dimitri and Kiera Romanov. If you have read Katee’s The O’Malleys series, specifically the sixth story The Bastard’s Bargain, then you will be familiar with them. I have not read any of these books yet, I do plan to after reading this story. Rose is the eldest of four girls and she takes being the heir quite seriously. I loved how strong her character was. She was incredibly tough and loyal. She has done very little to anger her parents except for when she accidentally stumbled into the bed of the enemy. Dante Verducci is from a rival mafia family based in Los Angeles. Dante hid who he was to get closer to Rose. It is his betrayal that is referenced in the title. Yet he is much more of a morally gray character. Dante is equal parts caring and devilish towards Rose. My absolute favourite part about Dante was all his Italianisms. Setting: The Romanov family is based in New York which just felt like a classic setting. A perfect setting to have rival mafia families duke it out. A good chunk of the novel is spent in the wilderness, in hiding. I love how a setting like that really forces characters to come together. With the New York mafia, world setting came a huge list of side characters. So many of whom I am excited to read about hopefully in the future. Especially Rose’s sisters are some gals I would love to read about next. Pacing: The story felt quite fast-paced. It would have been interesting to have had a bit of a longer book. Maybe more scenes of when Rose thought she was with a normal guy. I liked what Katee did with having the story open with Rose shooting Dante. I just did not have an investment built up to really feel the betrayal. Romance: These two were just hot, hot, hot together. There were so many great sexy scenes. I loved how Dante in one sentence would call Rose his beloved and in the next, he would be rough and dirty with her. Reading Rose’s resolved dissolve was really enjoyable. To read a woman who never saw herself worthy of anything but an arranged marriage, fight for the man she loves. The Bastard’s Betrayal receives four out of five stars. You can pick up the story here. This story is releasing on July 5th!! I cannot even describe how much I was anticipating this sequel. Outside of Inked in Lies, which remains my favourite Giana Darling novel. This duology is a very close second. Giana has blown me away with the depth of this story. Check out the Goodreads synopsis… “From Wall Street Journal bestselling author Giana Darling comes the conclusion to the Anti-Heroes in Love duet, a gripping mafia romance about the capo who will risk everything to keep the woman he loves safe… I am the hero no one wanted… I was a murderer. One of the cruelest and wealthiest men in New York City. Dante Salvatore, capo of capos. Yet I had one weakness. Elena Lombardi. Cold as ice, sharp as the edge of broken glass, and more beautiful than any woman should have the right to be, she stormed my defenses and razed my life as I knew it to the ground. For her, I would once again play the hero and prove myself worthy of her unconquerable heart. For her, I would change everything. I could have left her to the enemies hounding me, but instead, I made the unforgivable decision to take her with me to the old country. Now, there is no other option. In order to keep both of us safe, Elena Lombardi must become my wife” Check out my more detailed thoughts below… Characters: I really do not want to spoil you much so if you have not read the first instalment. Please stop reading this review and go pickup When Heroes Fall. If you read When Heroes Fall you should need my review to incentive you to pick up the next instalment but nonetheless my thoughts are all incredibly positive. The big standout for me is just how much character development Elena (and to a lesser extent Dante) went through. Elena was so much in her element. Turning into a mafia donna was the best goddamn thing to happen to her. Setting: I loved getting to run off to Italy in this instalment. For as many Lombardi world books Giana has written, none have really spent that much time in Italy. Which makes sense as the Lombardis had to flee Napoli. This story really showed the beauty of the grittiest place in Italy. The Villa with it’s lemon groves just sounded gorgeous. I may be very biased but I am Italian, so I just find it to be one of the most gorgeous settings in the world. Pacing: The pacing was perfect. Not too long, or too short. I read it quickly but I loved that I could just engulf this story. I am jealous of all of you guys now who can binge the two books back to back. I really love having this story be broken up over two instalments because one would not have been enough to fully flush out these characters. Yet three would have dragged the story along, the problem I found with Giselle’s trilogy. I want to give Giana a shout out here for the release schedule. Having the books close together but not too close together was absolutely perfect. I felt like excitement and momentum did not decrease, yet the stories coming out closer together helped me remember everything I read in the previous book. While also making the cliffhanger a lot more bearable. Romance: The romance in this story is nothing short of epic. This may be one of my favourite romances ever. The connection these two had and the way they made each other better and stronger was just immaculate. Dante did not impose new characteristics onto Elena, he helped her embrace her true self. As she opened up to him while also embracing the darkness within her, she learned to balance living in a world where she can be both a hero and a villain. These two have an electric chemistry, their kisses could start a three alarm fire. This romance made me feel every emotion possible, it had me crying, laughing, swooning and hot and bothered. I want to give a quick shout out too to all the Italian in this book. I absolutely adored the nicknames and as someone with an understating of the language it was nice to have a better understanding of some of the idioms Giana used. Granted I did not know much of the bedroom language, so it was also fun to learn some new naughty words. Brava Giana! When Villains Rise receives five out of five stars.
