Lauren Blakely’s Asking for a Friend ARC Review

Thank you to Lauren Blakely and her team for the review copy of the first standalone in the Boyfriend Material series, Asking for a Friend.

Check out the Goodreads synopsis…

“I was only trying to help a friend. I swear. I was legit asking for a friend who was finally ready to date again.

I knew what she wanted in a man — smart, funny, ambitious, well-read (no, the sports section doesn’t count), and plays a wicked game of badminton.

So I did what any good friend would do. Posted it for her. It seemed like a good idea at the time — I’d weed through the candidates, and bring her my top picks.

But then he responded.

Is it wrong to date the guy I screened for my bestie? Not asking for a friend.”

Check out my more detailed thoughts…

  • Characters = Amy and Linc were both wonderfully bookish characters. Both Amy and Linc work in the publishing industry, and as someone who wants to do that herself the lives of the characters take on a dream or fairytale like quality for me. Even if you don’t have the same career aspirations as me you will definitely appreciate the pop culture references that both Amy and Linc easily slip into conversation.
  • Setting = New York City makes sense as the setting as Lauren has been writing here exclusively for the last while, making connections between the characters easily. Amy Summers is Josh’s sister from one of Lauren’s previous books for example.
  • Pacing: This was paced pretty well. I felt a bit slumpy while reading it but I am pretty sure it was all me and not this book. Upon finishing the story I was definitely out of the small reading slump I was in.
  • Romance: Amy and Linc had the cutest book lovers romance. I loved the nature of this book was almost that the universe would not keep them apart. Their chemistry was electrifying and that came across immensely in all the sex scenes. An area that Lauren has improved in writing immensely!

I give Asking for a Friend five out of five stars.
