Thank you to Melanie Harlow and her team for the advance reader copy of Hideaway Heart, the second story in the Cherry Tree Harbor series.

I just adore Melanie’s small-town romances, she is just so damn good at what she does. Hideaway Heart features a bodyguard falling for his famous client and who doesn’t love that combination?

I am a Melanie Harlow review team member, but I remain honest and genuine in my reviews.

All I wanted was a break–two weeks off from being Pixie Hart, country music sensation, and fourteen days of peace, privacy, and solitude as plain old Kelly Jo Sullivan.

But thanks to some overzealous paparazzi, my family refuses to let me go anywhere alone, and I’m stuck sharing this tiny cabin with a tall, dark, and bearded stranger.

And guess what? There’s only one bed.

Well, he can couch it.

Xander Buckley might be hotter than a stolen blow torch, and I get that he’s a former Navy SEAL and all, but the man gives new meaning to the words overbearing, overprotective, bossy alpha male. I can’t even post a photo on social media without him warning me it’s not safe, or take a morning jog without him following behind.

But he’s made it clear that what he says goes, and if I don’t like it, I can kiss my vacation goodbye.

Instead, I end up kissing him.

I don’t even know how it happened–one minute we were at each other’s throats, the next we were at each other’s mercy. What’s even more shocking is how good we are together. He understands my need for freedom, and I understand his need for control.

But emotional trust doesn’t come easily to me. And we’re on two completely different paths.

Without question, I’d put my life in his hands.

Just don’t ask me to give him my heart.

Check out my more detailed thoughts below…

  • Characters: Our lead characters are Xander Buckley and Kelly Jo Sullivan. Kelly a.k.a Pixie Hart is a country music star who barrels into Xander’s life when her brother asks Xander to watch out for Kelly while she takes a vacation from her life. We meet Kelly at such an interesting place in her life, at almost a transition time in her career. She is getting fed up with giving in to what the studio, her ex, and others expect of her. I loved that this reset with Xander had Kelly shifting her priorities and seizing control back in her life. Xander is a former Navy Seal and used to work for Cole Security. If you have ever read a Corinne Michaels’ novel then you know what that means. If you haven’t well you should cause she and Mel are best friends, write in complimentary styles, and drop easter eggs for each other’s works in their books. Xander is very loyal, determined, and persistent. It was easy to fall for him. If you liked Austin in Runaway Love be prepared for another Buckley brother to steal your heart.
  • Setting: This story is set just outside of Cherry Tree Harbor proper. Kelly rented a remote cabin to unplug and get away from the paparazzi. It was adorable to read as Kelly and Xander started to fall for each other in such a cute setting. The cabin was not too far away from the town though which promoted so many scenes with Veronica and Austin (of the previous novel). It was interesting of Mel to do that this book runs parallel to the second half of Runaway Love. So you get the added bonus of seeing the previous book’s couple fall in love from a different point of view.
  • Pacing: This book is hard not to engulf, and I kept making more excuses to read it. My favourite part of the book was the first chunk of them initially falling in love and spending time together. As the rest of the story progressed it dipped a bit for me and became a bit predictable. But I can’t be angry at that as Mel wrote a story that made perfect sense for these two characters.
  • Romance: I adored reading Xander and Kelly fall in love. Kelly had a shitty ex and Xander had put everything above his own needs – so, of course, they were the perfect combination of just so damn deserving of this. Melanie always balances the emotions and the sex of her couples. So be prepared there are some fun steamy scenes, but still so much heart. A couple like this just gives you butterflies while you read and you never want their story to stop.

Hideaway Heart receives five out of five stars.

I am so excited to be reviewing for Sierra for my first time as an official Review Team member. I have been a member for months and was over the moon to learn the great news. I love Sierra. I could not be more honoured that my first book is her cowrite with the infamous Julie Murphy! I am a member of Sierra Simone’s review team, but I stand by my reviews remaining honest and true. “Cowritten by #1 New York Times bestselling author Julie Murphy and USA Today bestselling author Sierra Simone—a steamy plus-size holiday rom-com about an adult film star who is semi-accidentally cast as a lead in a family-friendly Christmas movie, and the former bad-boy pop star she falls in love with. Bee Hobbes (aka Bianca Von Honey) has a successful career as a plus-size adult film star. With a huge following and two supportive moms, Bee couldn’t ask for more. But when Bee’s favorite producer casts her to star in a Christmas movie he’s making for the squeaky-clean Hope Channel, Bee’s career is about to take a more family-friendly direction. Forced to keep her work as Bianca under wraps, Bee quickly learns this is a task a lot easier said than done. Though it all becomes worthwhile when she discovers her co-star is none other than childhood crush Nolan Shaw, an ex-boy band member in desperate need of career rehab. Nolan’s promised his bulldog manager to keep it zipped up on set, and he will if it means he’ll be able to provide a more stable living situation for his sister and mom. But things heat up quickly in Christmas Notch, Vermont, when Nolan recognizes his new co-star from her ClosedDoors account (oh yeah, he’s a member). Now Bee and Nolan are sneaking off for quickies on set, keeping their new relationship a secret from the Hope Channel’s execs. Things only get trickier when the reporter who torpedoed Nolan’s singing career comes snooping around—and takes an instant interest in mysterious newcomer Bee. And if Bee and Nolan can’t keep their off-camera romance behind the scenes, then this merry little meet cute might end up on the cutting room floor. Check out my more detailed thoughts below… Characters: Our heroine is plus-size porn star turned Christmas movie lead, Bee Hobbes. She finds herself cast in this very pure Christmas movie with the help of a director she has worked with in the porn industry, Teddy. Both of them are ready to diversify their portfolio and hence the Christmas movie. I love her personality, the way she would go about this with such gumption was inspiring. She is incredibly loyal, and a great friend. I loved the dynamic of her being the single child of two sex-positive moms. The male lead is Nolan Shaw, the heartthrob Bee crushed on him when she was a teen. The former boy band member is post-scandal and low on funds. Hence he has booked the male lead in the Christmas movie. I loved his commitment to his family, his mom and his sister. He is an incredibly caring person and it was lovely to laud that kindness on Bee. This book had a wonderful cast of side characters. All the other people who worked in the porn industry felt so charmingly out of place on the Christmas movie set. Angel, Astrid, Luca and Sonny, I loved them all. Teddy was probably one of the best parts of the book. I loved his character and his attempt to diversify his work portfolio, and then having to resort to filling all the techie positions with his contacts from porn. Setting: The setting is Christmas Notch, Vermont. A tiny town that is always decked out in Christmas decor for the sake of the movie industry. Everything was overly adorable and I loved all the overly Christmas stuff that seemed to ooze out of every aspect of the town. Even the strip club was called the North Pole and was super fun and corny. Pacing: This book was slightly longer but I still found it went by at a good clip. The ending had a great amount of time to play out, something I find romance is not always that good at. So props to Julie and Sierra for some great pacing. Romance: This romance had such an interesting premise. It was interesting that both of them had this familiarity with each other. That they had both fantasized about the other. Nolan was a fixture in Bee’s teenage years as her celeb crush. While Bee or Bianca stars in all of Nolan’s current fantasies as one of his favourite creators. So naturally, they had great sexual tension, and I loved the way Sierra and Julie went about depicting that against the backdrop of a Christmas movie. This romance was interesting. The best part was Julie and Sierra’s care in depicting Bee as a fat person worthy of love. I was hoping for more steam than this book delivered. I have been reading Sierra’s indie work for years so I know what she is capable of, and I am gathering much of the fade to black stems from this being a traditionally published story. There was so much teasing of things like toys and tougher play and then none of it ever happened. Their first scene together was my favourite, I love how it really represented the fantasies and tensions they carried with them to work every day. I loved how happy this made Tag and how Caleb wanted to explore the product and procedures with Tag. Pacing: Caleb and Tag may have fallen for each other quite quickly but because they are slow with each other the pacing of this book felt much slower. Some Vino & Veritas books open with hook-up scenes, so I enjoyed that this one had some different pacing. Romance: Caleb and Tag have an awesome meet-cute at the open mic night at Vino & Veritas. I love how right away Tag calmed down and supported Caleb. He helps Caleb overcome his stage fright and to grow his confidence in his art. I loved how gentle Tag was with inexperienced Caleb. Yet as the story went on I knew how Tag’s secretiveness was going to butt heads with how Caleb was wearing his heart on his sleeve. I did love this incredibly sweet and romantic love story. For my fellow steamy scene lovers, fear not the steam does increase. But overall this book is much more sickly sweet than sweaty, steamy. Save the bees, ride a rock star.

Formerly famous . . . and planning to keep it that way.

After my band kicked me out, I ran away to Vermont, changed my name, and kept my head down. So far, it’s working and nobody knows who I am. Or who I was. Until I see geeky poet Caleb stumbling through his first open mic night and I can’t help rescuing him. He’s as sweet as the honey my bees make and sexy enough to make me rethink so many things. The story releases on July 13th! I was a huge fan of this series and jumped at the chance to read and review this fourth instalment. It’s been over three years since Kristen has gifted us with one of these books, so I was very excited. Check out the Goodreads synopsis… “Brenna There are some people in life who know exactly how to push your buttons. For me, it’s Rye Peterson. We can’t spend more than ten minutes together before we’re at each other’s throats, which makes working together that much harder. Rye is the bassist for Kill John, the biggest rock band in the world, and I am his publicist. It doesn’t help that the man is gorgeous, funny, talented, and…never takes anything seriously. Avoidance is key. But everything changes when he overhears something he shouldn’t: a confession made in a moment of weakness. Now the man I’ve tried so hard to ignore is offering me the greatest temptation of all—him. Rye Brenna James is the one. The one I can’t have. The one I can’t get out of my mind. Believe me, I’ve tried; the woman loathes me. I managed well enough—until I heard her say she’s as lonely as I am. That she needed to be touched, held, satisfied. And I could no longer deny the truth: I wanted to be the one to give her what she craved. I convinced her that it would just be sex, mutual satisfaction with nothing deeper. But the moment I have her, she becomes my world. I’ve never given her a good reason to trust me before. Now, I’ve got to show Brenna that we’re so much better together than we ever were apart. Things are going to get messy. But getting messy with Brenna is what I do best.” Check out my more detailed thoughts below… Characters: Brenna is our female lead and she hides behind her suits and shoes like a suit of armour. She has been very attached to her job as the publicist for Kill John, her cousin’s Killian’s band. So much so that she is very alone and it’s becoming very apparent she is in want and need of a man. For performing an immense confidence she has her weaknesses. At her core she is one of those classic characters who does not see herself as someone worthy of love. Rye is our male lead and is much more introverted than the other guys in the band. Both Brenna and Rye have been keeping secrets not just from the band but from each other. Rye is hiding that he has issues with his hands and he sees his sucess wrapped up in them. Wrapped up in his ability to contribute to the band. Setting: The story is primarily set in New York. Yet some very special and milestone scenes happen in other settings. Such as Rye’s gorgeous Los Angeles home. Along with a trip to England that brings all of the characters together. In a series like this where I love and are attached to everyone I loved these large groups scenes with Killian, Libby, Scott, Sophie, Jax, and Stella. Pacing: This story was paced overall really well. I found the ending slightly rushed but the way it structured and the intent behind it really made any issues I had with it fade away. Romance: This relationship starts as a simple hookup, yet all of us readers know these things never remain simple. Brenna even scedules the nights they sleep together in their early days. But really they have crushed on each other for years and no one has ever made a move. When they really neeed the other as a shoulder to cry on. Or as a confidant, as a cheerleader and as a partner. Breanna and Rye feed each other’s souls when they are struggling to do that. I love how they showed each other that there is more to life than work and just how incredibly fullfilling love is. This romance is quite steamy. I loved the way it was hard for them to hide their feelings in bed. The vulnerability paired with the sensuality was an A+! Exposed receives five out of five stars. Thank you to Kristen Callihan and the team at Valentine PR for the advance reader copy of Exposed, the fourth story in the VIP series. The story releases on July 13th!

I was a huge fan of this series and jumped at the chance to read and review this fourth instalment. It’s been over three years since Kristen has gifted us with one of these books, so I was very excited.

Check out the Goodreads synopsis…

Brenna

There are some people in life who know exactly how to push your buttons.

Rye

Brenna James is the one.

But getting messy with Brenna is what I do best.”

Check out my more detailed thoughts below…

  • Characters: Brenna is our female lead and she hides behind her suits and shoes like a suit of armour.
  • Setting: The story is primarily set in New York.
  • Pacing: This story was paced overall really well. I found the ending slightly rushed but the way it structured and the intent behind it really made any issues I had with it fade away.
  • Romance: This relationship starts as a simple hookup, yet all of us readers know these things never remain simple.

I could not be more excited to be reviewing Fortunate Son, a book that I never expected to happen. I read Rule back in 2016 and now five years later I don’t just get to read about Rule’s son, I get to review his book with Jet’s daughter. It feels surreal almost. Check out the Goodreads synopsis… “Ry Archer and Bowe Keller are as different as night and day. But that doesn’t stop the childhood frenemies from reconnecting whenever one of them needs some help tackling any of life’s major puzzles, like figuring out why getting what you always thought you wanted isn’t living up to all the hype. They might constantly rub each other the wrong way (except for the times when they rub each other the really-really right way), but there is no denying they’ve always made one hell of a great team. They manage to balance each other out… when they aren’t driving each other crazy. He was going to marry young and have the same kind of legendary, life-long romance his parents did… or so he believed. Now, Ry’s gotta figure out the difference between a bruised heart and a broken one, and the only person who can teach him the difference is Bowe. Bowe always felt like she had to run before she learned to walk to keep up with her father’s musical legacy. He’s her hero, and she wants nothing more than to make him proud. Bowe needs to find her own path to fame, and there’s a good chance she wouldn’t be brave enough or bold enough to start over if Ry Archer hadn’t pushed his way back into her life when she least expected it. Some days they’re enemies. Other days they’re lovers. For a while, they were strangers. But now, it feels more like they might’ve always been soulmates.Eventually, Ry and Bowe realize that letting go of an old dream and creating a new one is much easier to do with the right person by your side.” Check out my more detailed thoughts below… Characters: Ry Archer is Rule and Shaw’s (Rule) son and his story opens with a fresh heartbreak. He just had his heartbroken by Aston Wheeler, the daughter of Hudson and Poppy (Salvaged). Ry is equal parts smart and athletic. He is one of those people who have their whole life planned out from playing pro football to scoring his dream girl. But maybe it was the wrong girl. Enter Bowe Keller, the daughter of Jet and Ayden (Jet). Bowe is following in her father’s footsteps and pursuing a career in music. Unlike Ry, she lacks direction and carefully curated plans. Both kids were the perfect blend of their parents. I enjoyed this aspect so much. It was also so incredibly wonderful to see the original characters as parents. I am so excited about future books as we have met more of the kids and I need to know their stories too. Setting: Ry flees Denver, Colorado to meet up with Bowe in Austin, Texas. Denver is riddled with all the pressure Ry feels and running off to Austin is quite healing for him. Away from prying eyes and their heavy history, Bowe and Ry are able to deal with their pasts and begin to build a future. Pacing: This story was paced really well. It did not feel too short or too long. I really enjoyed that I savoured it rather than devouring it. Jay’s writing almost makes you take your time so you are forced to digest it slowly and impactfully. Romance: Bowe and Ry are proof that opposites don’t just attract but flourish together. They had a chance to be together earlier in life, and that was lost to them. Now they are getting a second chance and I loved how they took it and ran with it. Bowe pushes Ry in a way that no other character does, she makes him reassess the life he has planned out. While Ry fights for Bowe and her dreams. They made me so emotional as I went from being happy to weepy. Then I also got to laugh and enjoy some very steamy scenes. I loved these two and everyone else around them. This story releases on May 27th! I love love love Fiona Cole and her romances that are equal parts a treat and a taboo. The blurb of this story had me begging for this ARC. It’s a rockstar romance, a second chance romance, and a step-brother/step-sister romance. So much goodness rolled up in one sweet package. Check out the Goodreads synopsis… “It started on a dance floor after too much tequila and ended with looking into the handsome face I never thought I’d see again. In person, at least. I saw his face all the time on magazine covers. To the world, he’s Parker Callahan—famous rockstar. To me, he was the boy I loved, the stepbrother who left me behind to follow his dreams. After our tequila-fueled encounter, he wants me back but that’s not a road I’m ready to walk down again. He broke my heart once, and even five years later, I’m not sure I could handle another blow. When a once-in-a-lifetime offer comes my way, even my broken heart isn’t enough for me to be able to turn it down. I agree to join the band’s tour and help Parker write his next album–but this time I’m not falling in love. This time I’ll walk away. But if there is one thing life has taught me, it’s that love never goes according to plan—especially when Parker is involved.” Check out my more detailed thoughts below… Characters: Nova is our protagonist she is an extremely unique character. Her fatal flaw is that she keeps running away from her problems and this haunts her during this entire story. I related quite a bit to Nova and her journey and how she grew more comfortable with her sensuality. Parker helped her do that. Parker is a rockstar with a heart of gold. Setting: The band is on tour for the vast majority of the tour so there is not one particular setting that stands out except for the tour bus itself. With the bunk bed-sharing and the camaraderie of the band, I could not help but love the close quarters. The other guys in the band were great and there is this super fun scene where they play truth or kiss. Just one of many scenes I adored. Pacing: There was a slight pacing issue, as in maybe the big reveal was too late. That may have caused it to be a bit rushed at the end. What I will say is that I found myself getting continually surprised which is not something that I usually get out of romance reads. Romance: I loved the sensuality of this romance. So many great taboo aspects it reminded me of Shame Me Not, one of my faves from Fiona. This story though in a similar vein is about learning, experiencing and embracing your kinks. On that note, there were some A+ hot to maximum level scenes in this book. Nova and Parker have the type of romance where they could never have loved other people. The roadblocks kept challenging them, yet they only got stronger. I loved them and I loved this book! Blame it on the Tequila receives five out of five stars. As a boy, he wasn’t able to make her stay. As a man, he might be her future. If they can mend their rifts and find solace in the refrains.” Check out my more detailed thoughts below… Characters: Quinn and Graham are the main characters of this immense second chance romance. Quinn is the drummer for Hush Note and in chasing that dream she left her home, her family, and Graham behind. The opening of the story paints the Quinn she is pushing on the world, that she is a cold bitch. As the story unfolds we begin to see as Nixon calls her, Montana Quinn. The real Quinn is so dynamic, I could not help but feel so much for this girl so fast. I found myself bawling with her when she had a breakdown only about a third into the book. Graham is the boy Quinn left behind, he was her high school sweetheart. He sees music more as a hobby, owns a construction company and is a single dad. Setting: Bozeman, Montana in classic Devney fashion she has brought us to her birth state. Devney paints the community that Quinn grew up around, her father was the pastor of the Church down the road. Being the daughter of the pastor in a small town came with a level of judgement that almost suffocated her. At the same time, you see the struggle in her as she years for the community of her family that Bozeman represents. Pacing: I never wanted this story to end. I devoured it. I have not stayed up past 1 am reading in a long time, but Devney made me! The story kept me so hooked, as I was already so invested so fast. It made me keep wanting to know more and more and more. Romance: Earlier I referred to this as an immense second chance romance. Devney is really good at writing it, she’s taken couples from divorce to remarrying and couples like Quinn and Graham who have always loved each other so deeply that there could never be anyone else. It was so apparent how in love with each other these two were, they both had moments of jealously that displayed it perfectly. They had electric chemistry both in and out of the bedroom. It was also so adorable to see Quinn’s relationship grow with Graham’s son. This may be one of Devney’s best romances yet. If I have not convinced you yet, check out this excerpt… “She took one step before stopping. A smile tugged at the corner of her mouth, the same corner I’d kissed earlier, and I fought the urge to stand and capture that mouth again. Her smile broadened, though there was pain in her eyes.  “Colin is a cool kid. You’re a good dad, Graham. I always knew you would be.” She might as well have stabbed me in the chest. “Thanks,” I said, watching as she walked away. Fuck me. When had I never loved that woman? Maybe that kiss had woken me up. Maybe it had made me realize how goddamn lonely I’d been without her. I had Colin, but there was a corner of my heart that would always belong to Quinn.  I should have followed her nine years ago. Because now it was too late.” Rifts and Refrains receives five out of five stars. • Pacing: I never wanted this story to end. I devoured it. I have not stayed up past 1 am reading in a long time, but Devney made me! The story kept me so hooked, as I was already so invested so fast. It made me keep wanting to know more and more and more.
  • Romance: Earlier I referred to this as an immense second chance romance.

If I have not convinced you yet, check out this excerpt…

“She took one step before stopping. A smile tugged at the corner of her mouth, the same corner I’d kissed earlier, and I fought the urge to stand and capture that mouth again. Her smile broadened, though there was pain in her eyes.

“Colin is a cool kid. You’re a good dad, Graham. I always knew you would be.”

She might as well have stabbed me in the chest.

Because now it was too late.”

Rifts and Refrains receives five out of five stars.

Emma Scott is one of those authors for me that hooks me emotionally. I always cry my eyes out while I read her stories. She never ceases to amaze me with how she carefully and thoughtfully she explores issues. Check out the Goodreads synopsis below… “At Santa Cruz Central High School, they called them the misfits, the outcasts, the weirdos. But most of us knew them as the Lost Boys… Miller Stratton is a survivor. After a harrowing childhood of poverty, he will do anything it takes to find security for himself and his mom. He’s putting all his hopes and dreams in the fragile frame of his guitar and the beauty he creates with its strings and his soulful voice. Until Violet. No one expects to meet the love of their life at age thirteen. But the spunky rich girl steals Miller’s heart and refuses to give it back. Violet McNamara’s life hasn’t been as simple as it looks. Her picture-perfect family is not so perfect after all. Her best friend Miller is her one constant and she is determined not to ruin their friendship with romantic complications. But the heart wants what it wants. As Miller’s star begins to rise to stratospheric heights, what will it take for Violet to realize that she’s the girl in all of his love songs? Lost Boys is a new series of interconnected, coming-of-age standalones from USA Today bestselling author Emma Scott, coming in 2020″ Check out my more detailed thoughts… Characters: Violet and Miller are the main characters of this emotional story. Violet is that girl who is determined, hardworking and with a heart of gold. Her friendship with Miller begins as she is compassionate towards him and the positions he has been put in. I do not want to spoil the aspects of Miller’s life I am referring to instead, I will say that way he navigates them is amazing to read about. Setting: The setting is Santa Cruz, California. It lends itself to smaller town, laidback vibes which really complemented the emotional tones of the story. Pacing: The nature of this story is that it leans more young adult than new adult based on the way it is paced. There is a small part at the beginning of the story about Violet and Miller as young children. Then at the end, there is a chunk of time at the end of the story post-high school and it was my fave part. I do wish there was more of it but I also do realize that the book is geared towards young adults. So it naturally made sense that the majority of the book focused on their senior year. Romance: Violet and Miller have that classic I love the other person so much but I cannot possibly express it. There was some teen angst of course but at the same time, both Violet and Miller were being careful, as they saw their friendship as something beautiful. They saw it as something sacred, and as the book progressed they realized that admitting they were in love with each other would only strengthen their already beautiful relationship.
