The world of Vino & Veritas is throwing an FBI agent into the mix. Yet, overall I found this installment a little underwhelming. What made this a fun little read still was the tension and the chemistry, it was off the charts! Check out the Goodreads synopsis… “Gabe wants Alec between the sheets…too bad Alec’s undercover already… Rich kid. Party boy. Gabe is tired of the labels. He’s a smart guy, but ever since he got kicked out of grad school, people are only interested in his no-limit credit card and his pierced ears…and other places. Tall, dark and scowling Alec hates Vermont, with its artisanal-freaking-everything and its irritating people. To be fair, most people irritate Alec, including the FBI director who sent him here to investigate a smuggling scheme involving yoga mats. When one of the cutest twinks Alec’s ever seen takes an interest, Alec knows there’s an ulterior motive. No one with multi-colored hair, piercings, and an ass like that would want boring, serious Alec. The kid must be up to no good. Either way, Alec can’t blow his cover. If only he could keep his hands off of Gabe long enough to find out what he’s up to… Can they ignore their explosive chemistry long enough to foil a smuggling ring? Or will their budding relationship sink faster than a yacht full of contraband?” Check out my more detailed thoughts below… Characters: Gabe and Alec are the main characters of this story. We meet Gabe, a rich kid who has been recently kicked out of his Ph.D. program. He missed one too many classes while getting caught up with a nasty Ex and the party scene. Gabe has fluorescent coloured hair and piercings, he is a much more edgy protagonist for this series. While Alec is not a permanent resident of Burlington, rather he is from Albany and is an FBI agent assigned to a case that brings him to Vermont. Alec is to investigate yoga studios that the FBI believes may be fronts for a heroin operation. Setting: Burlington, Vermont is the setting of course. Alec absolutely hates Vermont, being from upstate New York all he wants to do is finish the job and get back home. I get that small-town Burlington is not for everyone. But even someone like Gabe could go anywhere with the funds he has but he stayed in Vermont after being kicked out of Moo U. They get to go to a really fancy party and hook up in a really fun place, so no spoilers but you will for sure enjoy that. Pacing: The story was paced okay. I think it would have benefited from a larger page count as a lot was going on and not enough of it was really flushed out. The FBI investigation felt too easy and more pages would have allowed for more roadblocks. Alec keeps a lot from Gabe naturally and I think holding these secrets would have been more impactful if it had been for a longer amount of time. Romance: The boys have an immediate response to one another. They both find the other very hot and there is no doubt that there is an attraction to one another. They are both experienced guys, comfortable in their sexuality. For Alec, he and his ex ended it about a year ago, when Alec caught him cheating. Gabe broke things off when his ex was feeding his bad behaviour. Initially, Alec is a little sus of Gabe, when he tails him one night it ends with a little moonlight makeout in the park. They end up going on a date to Vino & Veritas on a date and cannot stop feeling sexual tension. That was the best part of this story, the guys had so much chemistry with each other and their romantic scenes were extremely hot. Undercover receives three out of five stars.
