Misty Walker’s Kian’s Focus ARC Review

Thank you to Misty Walker and the team at Valentine PR for the advance reader copy of Kian’s Focus, the second story in the Brigs Ferry Bay series.

I absolutely adored the first book in the series, Sheriff’s Secret. These small town gay romances are equal parts steamy and teary. I get so emotionally invested in these couples and I can’t wait to see the world that grows out of these first two stories.

Check out the Goodreads synopsis…

“I lost my boyfriend on the night I had planned to propose.
It was a horrific accident that was all my fault.
I gave up and resigned myself into a life of obscurity.

Until I got a call that my sister, Sara, needed me.
It gave me purpose and I ran to her rescue.
Because that’s what I’ve done our whole lives.

That’s how I ended up in Brigs Ferry Bay.
But when I showed up, things were so much worse than I thought.
She was sullen, fragile, and sinking into a depression I didn’t know how I’d get her out of.
Together, we were drowning.

Until I met Kian.
He’s everything I’m not.
Bouncy, bubbly, full of life, and an innate ability to make everything better.
He makes me believe I can be happy again.

Now the unthinkable has happened and Sara is on the verge of losing her life.
Once again, it’s all my fault.
Kian had clouded my vision with promises of hope and forever.
I was so stupid to believe I could be happy again.

I try push him away.
To shove him out of the darkness that follows me.
I don’t want him to suffer the future fate had secured me to.
But Kian’s focus is on me
And he’s used to getting what he wants.

*Brigs Ferry Bay is a steamy MM romance series. While each book can be read as a standalone, to get the full experience, they’re best read in order.
Enemies to lovers, hurt comfort, age-gap romance, and so much more.
Fall in love with the charming small-town gay romances of Brigs Ferry Bay.”

Check out my more detailed thoughts below…

  • Characters: Archer moves to the town of Brigs Ferry Bay to be with his sister Sara after her husband leaves her. Before moving Archer lost his partner in a boating accident. They owned a crabbing company in Alaska and in a freak accident, Mason was swept off the boat. The impetus for Archer’s move is to take care of his sister and his kids after her husband skipped town and took all their money. Archer picks up a job at BFB Fishing company, they fish lobster so I guess close enough haha. Kian is the local in this story. He is out and proud despite his high school boyfriend, Jax keeping him in the closet. Kian owns the club and winebars Blur and Focus. Kian is the preppy planner type, who looks nerdy chic in suspenders and a bowtie. While Archer is the more rugged mountain man type.
  • Pacing: I loved the pace at which the story progressed. Archer is obviously still mourning Mason and Kian still has some issues to work on surrounding his high school relationship. The biggest plot point besides their love story is Sara’s issues surrounding her divorce. They escalated at such a great pace for the story.
  • Setting: The setting is Brigs Ferry Bay which is a fictionalized Maine town. The small-town antics existed of course, like everyone knowing each other and the small businesses. Kian takes Archer on a little tour and it showed off the small town to the readers as well.
  • Romance: I adored these two together. They were the definition of opposites attract; Kian the 30-year-old nerdy bar owner and Archer the buff 40-year-old fisherman. It was so wonderful to see them open up to each other about their pasts as Archer opens up about Mason and his family situation that forced him to have to parent Sara at a young age. While Kian opens up about his anger towards Jax and Dante (you gotta read Sheriff’s Secret to understand why). Kian and Archer had such good chemistry, such awesome scenes together from a sweet first kiss to steamy fun times.

Kian’s Focus receives five out of five stars.
